There are also several small hotels in the area, like the Grosvenor Hotel in Stockbridge (01264 810606), where the former Prince of Wales is reputed to have dallied with the actress Lily Langtry! Rooms at the Grosvenor range from £75 to £90 for double occupancy, including breakfast.
For the spouses and families of fishermen who seek alternative activities while the fisherman is occupied fishing, the region offers a wide variety of alternatives. If the weather is fine there are numerous walks along the Test Way, which follows the course of the River Test, or visits to well known historical sites such as the Danebury Ring Iron Age hill fort, Stonehenge , Winchester Cathedral and Castle (home of King Arthur’s Round Table) or Salisbury Cathedral (home of the Magna Carta). All are within half an hour’s drive and offer easy parking, eating houses and shopping. For those who would like to play golf there are two 18-hole courses catering to casual golfers and for those in search of more sophisticated pursuits London is a one hour train ride away from either Winchester or Andover, with trains running every half hour and taxis available at the stations.
